Thoughts

September 14, 2009 by Pete Carapetyan

"Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny."

Variations of this are attributed to many people but the oldest variation is attributed to ancient Chinese philosopher Laotzi  (see http://soniabranco.typepad.com/my_holistic_coach/2006/10/watch_your_thou.html )

This is the kind of thing that you might pick up in an NLP class. Please note that it is

  • quite helpful (if applied in daily life)
  • fairly universal

So is it NLP just because they picked it up somewhere and delivered it to you ? A reasonable question to ask.

To be fair, one measure of the answer might be in the delivery. For example, If the instructor can give a person a specific methodology to "watch" one's thoughts in a practical sense of the word, then perhaps that might be a reasonable gauge of the effectiveness of NLP as discipline.
